Increased call volume and level funding since 1990 jeopardizes our fire department’s future

Last year we hadover 2,000 calls come through the winfield fire protection district. That’s a 162% increase in call volume since the volunteer service was set up in 1991. Our fire department has been operating with the same equipment and budget for almost 30 years.

Did you know? That the Winfield Fire Protection district covers more than just winfield.

The  animated map below displays the coverage area for the district. The green color outlines the Winfield Village area which makes up only 1/4th of the territory. Half of the homes have West Chicago, Carol Stream, or Wheaton addresses.

Fire Equipment Upgrades

Each year the price of fire trucks and ambulances increases by 4.5%. The average fire fleet age is 16 years old. We need one new fire engine.

Ambulances Worn Out

80% of calls are for medical service. Our ambulances are 10 & 15 years old. Increased call demand =another ambulance crew needed. We need to buy three (3) ambulances.

Aging Facilities

Our fire stations average 40 years old and were built for volunteer service, not a full time busy urban service. We need significant station upgrades.

Fire Prevention

Because WFPD has been short staffed, we have no fire prevention services. We need fire prevention services.
